January gave us a taste of warm weather with springlike temps that had me reaching for lighterweight staples. February, on the other hand, has seemingly made up for it with an endless amount of rain—and even the tiniest bit of snow! But while it’s almost an instinct to want to bundle back up when it’s cold and raining, I actually still prefer to stick to lightweight staples that are easy to layer. Enter my favorite rainy day style: the trench coat.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had plenty of anorak and cargo style rain jackets in my collection, which do the job, at least in California, but there’s something so classic, timeless and effortless about a tan trench coat. You can be wearing the most basic outfit and popping on a trench coat will instantly elevate the look and even how you feel. If you don’t have one in your collection yet, I promise it’s a style worth investing in and certainly a style that belongs in any capsule collection.

FYI, this particular trench is a few years old by Andrew Marc and wasn’t a huge splurge in any way but it’s taken me FAR and through many, many seasons, rainy or otherwise.

The day I wore this outfit, we actually had a break in the rain so I was able to slip into flats for work and paired these black Madewell skinny jeans with a leopard bodysuit from & Other Stories. I don’t typically go for leopard print but I love the almost-subtle pop when paired with black. The trench coat really helps tone it down for day but you could just as easily add a black moto jacket and black booties for an edgy look for night or slip into white sneakers for something casual-cool.

One last tip when looking for a trench: if you’ll truly be wearing it in the rain, try looking for a hooded style—they don’t all have them!

Do you have a trench coat in your collection? As always, thank you so much for reading!
