February Trunk Club

February Trunk Club | www.girlmeetsgold.com

I got my second Trunk Club Trunk last month and my Stylist, Lauren, nailed it. If you’re interested in scheduling your own Trunk, you can use this link to be paired up with Lauren. I scheduled mine to come every two months but you can select your own shipment preferences. To find out more about Trunk Club and see my first Trunk, check out THIS POST.

To be totally honest, I was a little hesitant to start because I’m pretty particular and have also been trying to shop and spend less. But I found myself shopping less in between each Trunk and Lauren helps me build up wardrobe staples and also try a few things I wouldn’t normally. I also love how you can see your Trunk before it ships and make any requests or changes. It’s fun because she also includes outfit pairings within each Trunk AND shares how things can work with items you kept from your previous Trunks.

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already saw me rave about this floral wrap bodysuit. Unfortunately, it’s almost gone but I highly recommend keeping an eye on it and I’ll be sure to update with any restocks!

I’ve told Lauren date night style is something lacking in my wardrobe and I absolutely adore both the classic fit and feminine silhouette of this top. It’s beyond flattering and I love how it can serve so many purposes from work to play, season after season. How cute would this look paired with cutoff shorts and strappy sandals this summer? It’s a great price at just $45 and I have it in an xs. Be aware, it’s pretty open in the front but I found it easy to sort of tuck it to keep it in place.

Lauren also sent this ALLSAINTS striped knit top and it’s incredibly soft and tucks beautifully into high rise jeans. To be honest, it’s more expensive than I would prefer to spend but I can also see this working for every season and I’d truly rather splurge on quality and make purchases that will last, rather than having multiple striped tops that fall apart.

I told Lauren I’d be interested in some Topshop jeans, since I love how they fit. She sent two super skinny styles (which I love) in an Indigo wash and a pair in dark blue that almost looks like faded black. They’re both high rise and fit tight all the way through the ankle. This style instantly makes me feel more feminine and somehow put together. These do run a bit small, so if you’re in between sizes, I would size UP. I’m in a 25.

I also paired the striped top with this BlankNYC suede skirt Lauren sent. It’s funny because I was actually wanting a classic, neutral skirt so I was really excited to see this one. Unfortunately, this ran a little big but Trunk Club let’s you easily exchange, so I’m awaiting a smaller size.

Lauren sent these Sam Edelman knee high boots which I didn’t initially think I would like but they ended up surprising me. I didn’t end up keeping them mainly because they were a little big and not something I felt I needed in my wardrobe at this time.

Before my shipment, I told Lauren I loved this plaid trench coat and I was happy to see it in my Trunk! It’s a classic style I feel good in and often find myself needing something lightweight to layer over sweaters and basics.

Lastly, I told Lauren I’d love to see athleisure pieces in my Trunk and she sent so many things that were literally on my own “need” list. I kept a new pair of Zella high waist leggings in black to replace a couple worn-out pairs, as well as this Ultrasoft Recycled Pullover Hoodie. It really is incredibly soft and I actually wanted something exactly like this for morning walks with the dogs. I love how it has thumbholes, a hood and a pocket.

A few more things not pictured that were included in my Trunk:

Zella Ultrasoft Recycled Jogger Pants

Zella Twist Cowl Neck Pullover

Beyond Yoga Lounge Around Jogger Pants

Beyond Yoga High Waist Midi Leggings

Have you tried Trunk Club? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experience. Again, you can be matched up with my Stylist, Lauren, by using this referral link.

As always, thank you for reading!

Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Tariq and I went out for dinner and drinks on Friday and it was SO damn windy (and just a little bit freezing), so I’d like to apologize in advance for these…um, very winded, slightly blurry, kind of funny-faced photos. I swear I was happy. 💁‍♀️

This was an incredibly easy look for an impromptu date night, made up of items most of us probably already have in our closet: the classic striped button-down (button-up?), dark wash denim, black booties and a moto/biker jacket. This look truly takes you from desk to dinner with ease. Keep a moto jacket on-hand or in your car and you can easily swap out your blazer or office cardigan.

These are one of the Topshop jeans I got in my Trunk Club (blog post coming soon) and I can’t get over the super skinny, flattering fit. Fyi, they do run a bit small/very skinny, so you may want to consider sizing UP! Here I’m wearing my normal size but easily could have gone one size up.

I know we’re heading into spring but I also highly recommend these Marc Fisher ankle boots (from my first Trunk Club) if you’re in need of a really good pair. Sometimes I’ve disliked black booties in the past for making an outfit feel…clunky? Not as sleek?…but these are a winner. They’re just cool-as-can-be and give a really sleek, chic vibe with any outfit. You guys know I’ve been all about adding higher quality wardrobe staples to my collection and these are definitely one of them.

Heading into spring, I love this exact same outfit with light wash boyfriend fit jeans (like these Levi’s), nude flats and swap out the striped shirt for crisp white! So maybe it’s not the exact same outfit but it’s an easy variation.

My exact J.Crew shirt is old (gotta love a closet staple you get years out of 🙌🏼), so I’m linking dupes!

How to Wear a Striped Turtleneck

How to Wear a Striped Turtleneck | www.girlmeetsgold.com

You guys know I’ve been all about curated a capsule wardrobe lately: shopping less, buying with intention, wearing more of what I own. One of those wardrobe staples/must-haves is easily a striped knit top. With so many variations, I think it’s smart to have this style in a few silhouettes. One style favorite? The striped turtleneck.

If you want a quick way to look and feel Parisian chic, a striped turtleneck is your new best friend. It’s an effortless staple that not only keeps you bundled up in colder months but transitions beautifully into warmer weather. Think white denim, cropped denim and espadrilles…the options are endless.

Here I tucked mine into these ripped Levi’s jeans that are ultra flattering. A high rise style definitely helps make tucking a breeze and I love how clean and polished a full tuck looks. I slipped into these black Marc Fisher ankle boots but a pair of loafers in cognac or nude would really pull the look together into spring.

FYI, my exact top is a couple years old from Madewell but there are plenty of perfect dupes out there to recreate the look and I linked several below.

I topped the look with a felt hat but you can again take the look into warmer weather with a straw boater hat!

Here are a couple more looks you can create with the striped turtleneck:

How to Wear a Belt Bag in a Chic Way

How to Wear a Belt Bag | www.girlmeetsgold.com

Ask a lot of people their opinion on a fanny pack and their mind might immediately go to something neon and 80’s style or velcro and meant for travel only. But the truth is, today, fanny packs have really evolved into a chic and stylish accessory, more lovingly referred to as: the belt bag.

A belt bag is not only a unique statement piece that can turn heads but it’s also a practical style, allowing you to be hands-free. Great for travel and would be a wonderful accessory option for mom life. Think walks, trips to the zoo, bike rides and really just daily life. Keep in mind, you can still wear a belt bag slung over your head and shoulder.

This & Other Stories O-Ring belt bag is my first foray into the style but it’s something I chose with a lot of intention. I chose black because it’s timeless and can cover both day and night. I chose snakeskin embossed leather because it gives just enough edge to make an intentional statement. And the O-Ring because it adds the finishing touch. Basically, this belt bag has the perfect amount of detail so it doesn’t fall flat. And it really adds a chic flair in an instant.

A belt bag can really help pull a look together and can truly be the perfect finishing touch to elevate a basic outfit. Grab your everyday go-to combination (mine is always jeans and a tee) and try a full or half tuck. I have personally been loving and living in these H&M jersey tops (only $14.99) and they have a comfy, flattering fit that’s not at all messy. They tuck really well but also sort of hold you in. The black on black in this look gives a monochromatic touch that works well for both day and night but you could just as easily top with a brown suede jacket like this one or add an olive cargo jacket (like the one from this post) and sneakers to keep things extra casual.

As we head into spring and summer, belt bags can work incredibly well belted around t-shirt and flirty dresses to add a bit of shape. I personally can’t wait to wear mine with a little white dress but the options are truly endless.

Camel Coat, White Sweater + Talking About Shopping Less

Happy, happy New Year, friends! I hope you’re all enjoying time off or time spent with friends and family. We’ve had a busy holiday season but have also been able to enjoy some relaxation and I hope the same for you!

I’ve been meaning to share this look on the blog and thought it would be the perfect classic, timeless look to kick off the New Year and also share something that’s been on my mind. One thing I’ve been working on is shopping with intention (meaning adding more wardrobe staples vs. trends), while also re-working items in my closet. I think in this world of Instagram and blogging, there’s so much “stuff” with pressure to buy, buy, buy, keeping up with the latest this or that. And while I don’t think there’s anything wrong with indulging or treating yourself, sometimes you just need a reset.

Honestly, I think one thing that’s helped has been our move. I have an outrageous amount of clothes. And packing them into countless boxes helped me visualize this excess. So many don’t even see the light of day. And that’s horrible. Stressful even! Why am I buying so much, why do I feel like I’m wasting so much, why do I feel like I have nothing to wear? I spent some time purging and donating, while giving life to items in my closet I truly love, and also focusing on building up my wardrobe staples. My plan is to continue this pattern. And honestly, you guys…it’s refreshing.

This season, I’ve shopped less, investing in pieces I truly love and have noticed I actually have less desire to shop—yet somehow I have more to wear.

I finished 2018 with this mindset (shopping with intention) and it’s something I plan to continue into (and hopefully through) 2019. Building a wardrobe of items that fill a void, pieces I feel confident in, things I can wear again and again, season after season, and pieces that are worn, loved and see the light of day.

For me, this outfit is the epitome of what I want to continue to build on. I bought this camel coat last year (I think during Black Friday or a holiday sale) and hesitated because we don’t have that many opportunities to wear coats in day-to-day life in California. But I’m so glad I ended up with it because a camel coat is one of those timeless wardrobe staples I’m talking about. Something you can reach for with everything and that you can throw on to feel put-together and chic in an instant. THAT is the feeling I want to focus on in 2019.

Classic Camel Coats

Pairing camel with winter white is one of my favorite combinations and white sweaters are a soft spot for me. You guys, I have too many. BUT, my intention is to focus on more classic silhouettes this season. For me, that means fewer oversized styles and slouchy silhouettes I don’t always feel work for any and every occasion. Don’t get me wrong, slouchy sweaters have their place (hello, #weekendstyle with leggings and sneakers) but I know I feel better in something with a little more structure and it’s what I end up reaching for when I want to look and feel presentable. Sweater styles I’ve been looking for are crew necks, mock necks and generally styles that have a bit more structure. Also, I don’t need 5-7 similar lower-quality sweaters when I can have 2-3 high-quality staples.

Classic Staple Sweaters

Another area I’ve focused on is boots. I have too many shoes, not enough shoes to wear. Anyone else? I talked about these M.Gemi Corsa boots already and if you have the opportunity to spend a little more, I highly recommend them and the M.Gemi brand in general. This pair is timeless and chic and can be worn casually and dressed up—which was something I know I was lacking. I love how they come up a little higher on the leg, which is great for letting skinny jeans fall into or straighter styles fall over. In this outfit, you can see how I tucked my jeans into them. I also love the 2.15 inch heel on these. They’re incredibly comfortable and easy to wear. You can get $60 off with code TYLER60. I’m between an 8 and 8.5 and wear the 39 in these.

You also may have seen I asked my Trunk Club Stylist (see this post) for some everyday boots and I ended up buying two more pairs that also fill a void in my collection. These Steve Madden ankle boots were the perfect-shade-of-brown booties (I have the cognac suede) I couldn’t put my finger on I was missing. I’ve had a hard time with Chelsea boots in the past but these are a great everyday-casual style I’ll be slipping into. The price point is great at just under $100 and they come in several colors. FYI, I always wear an 8.5 in Steve Madden but I almost think I could have even done an 8. I read reviews from people mentioning they sized up but I would probably stick to your normal size first.

The last pair of ankle boots I bought myself this season will be another wardrobe staple for me and also came in my Trunk Club. These Marc Fisher ‘Yale’ Chelsea boots in black are my new “cool girl” boots. Sleek, stylish and a little slick. These can easily do casual to dressy and will be what I reach for on a night out and will be my go-to with black denim and a moto jacket. In my experience, these run a little big. I had to exchange the 8.5 for an 8.

Classic Ankle Boots

To be honest, the main thing that has changed in terms of my shopping is this: I ask myself if something fills a void in my wardrobe. If the answer is no, I don’t buy it. And I am going to try to continue shopping with this mindset. For me, I know my void includes timeless sweaters I can wear for both work and play, outerwear that can do double duty and I always seem to notice a lack when I need something a little dressy or special for a night out.

What’s an area of your own closet you’d like to build? I plan to continue to share great deals, sales, finds and my favorite outfits with you all but I am honestly so excited to focus on building up a closet full of wardrobe staples (and pieces I feel good in) and I can’t wait to shop less in 2019.

As always, thank you SO much for reading and Happy HAPPY New Year to all of you!

xx Tyler
