4 Must-Have Layers for Fall

With fall on the horizon, I wanted to share a few of my favorite go-to outerwear options. These are the main staples I reach for with casual wear and I think that’s often the category where people crave a little extra inspiration. The everyday layers you live in, the styles that are comfortable and not overly fussy…the ones you reach for that just make you feel good. These are those.

I shared outfit inspiration from last season for each outerwear option and, unfortunately, the exact styles are all old or sold out but I made sure to link plenty of dupes to recreate the looks!

The Utility

Whether you call it a military jacket, fleet jacket, utility jacket or anorak, there’s no denying this is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. This will be the style you reach for to pair with everything from jeans to leggings and will be a go-to for morning dog walks and school drop-offs to casual dinners out. This style is incredibly versatile and I personally love the double-duty option of wearing it open, cinched or tied at the waist. Olive green is also a great option with an instantly casual vibe. It’s a great fall neutral to break up your other favorite neutrals and the color goes with practically everything—you just can’t go wrong!

See how I styled mine with Spanx faux leather leggings and sneakers in this post.

The Blazer

For when you want to feel a little more put together, a blazer is the answer. This is the layer that adds plenty of structure and style without any fuss. I personally prefer one with a little stretch for added comfort (and movement) and tend to opt for something with a touch of spandex and a boyfriend silhouette. I find this strikes just the right balance between structured and relaxed aka casual-cool.

A blazer is what you’ll reach for for date night, girls night, special events, work parties, school events, holidays and more. Throw on jeans and a white tee with a blazer on top and I promise you’ll feel instantly chic and more “styled.”

Last fall, I loved the vibe a plaid blazer gave to any outfit but am also craving a camel color for something classic, neutral and chic.

See how I styled mine with black denim and faux snakeskin flats in this post.

The Teddy

Another great casual option with just the right amount of “trend.” A teddy (aka fleece aka sherpa aka faux shearling) jacket is equal parts comfy and luxe and I personally love how they look both dressed up and dressed down. I’ve picked up a few lower-end styles over the years and last year decided to splurge on a Madewell version that got so much wear and definitely felt a little more elevated and structured than any of the $20 versions I’d tried over past seasons.

This is the comfy-cozy layer you’ll find necessary when you just feel cold! Last year, I was constantly grabbing my teddy jacket to take the dogs out in the morning and it’s great that it’s a style you can also feel comfortable cuddling up on the couch in. 😅

See mine styled casually in this post.

The Trench

If you don’t have a trench coat in your collection, I highly recommend adding one this season. This is truly a wardrobe staple every woman should own and you’ll wear yours all fall through spring. I love the look of a sleek style with no hood but to make it truly functional (i.e. wearable for a rainy day), I would opt for a style with a hood—bonus points if it’s removable!

This is another outerwear staple that just looks chic with minimal effort. You can throw one on to elevate a leggings + sneakers look, pair with cozy sweaters and booties for something casual or even layer over dresses all season long. 👏🏼

Nude Cami with White Pants and Denim Jacket

Nude Cami with White Pants and Denim Jacket | www.girlmeetsgold.com

If you follow me on Instagram (or read my blog), it’s definitely no secret that my go-to outfit formula is blue jeans + white top + XYZ shoe and done. ✔️And as we head into fall, I tend to keep this formula but with one minor twist added into the outfit rotation. I’ll sometimes swap the blue jeans for white or black denim to make layering with a denim jacket a breeze. 😎Is this a mind blowing outfit? No. Does it make you look and feel chic as hell? Definitely.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good Canadian Tuxedo (i.e. denim on denim look) but there’s something so chic about a denim jacket paired with white pants and something innately “cool” about a denim jacket worn with black jeans. Visual in this post! It’s truly one of those “I have nothing to wear” formulas that works…and if it ain’t broke…

For this summer-to-fall look, I chose white pants, pairing my favorite Everlane straight leg pants with this And Other Stories nude cami and then threw a denim jacket into the mix as an easy layer. I love how the pants and pointed toe Cole Haan flats elevate the outfit just slightly but you could just as easily try skinny jeans and white sneakers for something ultra-casual. Coming from someone who’s typically a ‘skinny jeans only’ type of person, these pants have become my absolute favorite flattering straight leg style. They still have plenty of structure and I love the ultra-high rise and subtle flare. I found these run a little big. I’m normally a size 25 or 0 in denim and had to go with the 00 in these.

And a tiny tip for making any out feel more chic than casual on the casual-chic spectrum—or even from heading into sloppy territory? Your neckline! It would be so easy to reach for your favorite relaxed tee here but…! Instead of the lived-in, v-neck style you always reach for, try one with a crewneck or square neck. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good relaxed, comfy tee but anything that droops or gapes or just hangs there can so easily read as sloppy. If you opt for styles with a bit more shape (whether it’s in fabric or neck line or both) there’s an added element of structure that I promise will make you feel just as comfortable—and ten times chicer. 👏🏼

For reference, I’m wearing a US 2 in this nude camisole and it runs true to size.

What’s your go-to outfit formula as we head into fall? Do you have one?

As always, thank you so much for reading!

White Jeans with Grey Tee and Denim Jacket

White Jeans with Grey Tee and Denim Jacket

Usually, I’m sharing an outfit with a white top and I’m sure you all know that’s my go-to outfit by now. But when I want an easy way to mix things up, I swap out my light wash jeans for black or white denim. I recently pulled out these white Everlane high rise skinny jeans I got last year and they’re a great effortless style for the season. I sized up in them last year and they’re an ever-so-slightly slightly relaxed fit on me. If you want them skinnier, I would definitely stick to your normal size, as they do bag out slightly. FYI, I’m 5’6” and have the ankle length and am wearing a size 26. They’re also a great price at $68!

summer dress style

Another day, another midi dress. By now, you can probably tell I’m very into this style lately. No shame. There’s just something about the effortless fit that makes me love throwing them on. I feel classic, feminine and chic in an instant and you don’t have to worry about showing anything off when you bend over? Win, win, win. These are perfect for running around town. And a classic striped midi dress? Even better.

I honestly thought this Vici striped midi dress was going to be more of a cotton fabric when I ordered it because I didn't read the description. I didn’t realize until it came that it was more of a slinky, polyester and spandex combination, but I ended up loving that because it’s wrinkle-free, super stretchy and perfectly swingy. This would be a great piece for travel!

I tossed it on with a denim jacket for a cooler evening but still kept it dressy with slide heels. Again, I love how you could also wear this with sandals or even sneakers for a casually cool vibe. For me, I think the key to midi dresses is having something that nips in at some part of your body and this does a great job of flattering the waist. I'm 5'6" and the length is great with both flats and heels.

One of my all time combinations (besides denim and lace) is leather and lace. I'm a big fan of mixing styles, and feminine and edgy are two of my all time favorites together. Liquid leather leggings and a top with romantic details was one of my go-to's, especially throughout the cooler months, and I love throwing on a faux leather jacket over a pretty blouse, but I don't think I've ever had a piece that did the mixing FOR me. Until now! When I saw this faux leather and lace cami from Jewel Be Mine I was instantly intrigued. I love the edginess of the leather with just a touch of lace and as weird as this sounds, I really think it might be one of those classic wardrobe staple pieces. I initially thought it would be a fun piece to have for a night out, but I was determined to make it work for day, as well. And you know what? It really did work. I knew a denim jacket would instantly tone down the sexiness it gives off, but a simple cardi could do the same. Paired with white skinnies (or even a fun printed pencil skirt) it was perfect for a day of window browsing and wine tasting. It didn't hurt that there happened to be a motorcycle convention and my leather fit in quite nicely. But really--I'm excited to get some wear out of this one!

I also snagged this studded deco necklace (below) from Jewel Be Mine. They have some really fun pieces at affordable prices, and again--a good mix of edgy. classic, feminine, glam. Their clothing is similar with somewhat of a classic "California" vibe and touches of glam and edge. At seriously great prices! My top is only $39!

I'm a big fan of neutrals and pastels all year round, but especially during the winter months. There's something so crisp and clean about about a little winter white, grey, or even pastel pink. These Jbrand skinnies are a soft pink that get a lot of spring and summer wear, but I am loving the lighter colors for fall and winter, too. A denim jacket, neutral booties, and a pop of oxblood take this springy look into winter!

Mad for Plaid...and Houndstooth

With the temperatures dropping and winter quickly approaching, scarves are becoming the easiest and most functional way to accessorize. My simple denim on denim look got an instant update thanks to a pop of... blanket scarf! Last season I completely missed out on the blanket scarf craze and I seem to be on a mission to make up for it this year. I picked up the infamous tartan scarf on eBay last month, but had also had my eye on this one for quite some time. When I saw it on Brina Box I knew I (might as well) snag it, and I have to say... I think I might like it even more than my tartan. Is it weird to say I think the tartan washes me out?! This one is double sided which means you get a mix of two of the seasons trendiest patterns, plaid and houndstooth, and of course, extra bang for your buck. With the multitude of ways to tie a blanket scarf (not to mention, it's actual function as a blanket!) it really is like getting at least(!) 10 different scarves in one.
