My Trunk Club Vacation Favorites

My Trunk Club Vacation Favorites

I shared a bit of my recent Trunk Club Trunk in my Instagram Stories over the weekend and I love how you guys are always so intrigued. You may remember earlier this year I vowed to shop less and buy with more intention and my Trunks have definitely helped with this. I know, I know—how is a box full of clothes helping you shop less, exactly? Well, to start, I have them set up to come every two months and concentrate on not shopping in between those months. I focus on asking my Stylist for classic, wardrobe staples and find that when I have to “check out” by providing feedback for each item, it helps me really pinpoint if I actually do need an item—or if I don’t. More about Trunk Club in THIS POST but if you’re interested in getting your own Trunk, you can use this link to be set up with my Stylist, Lauren. She’s amazing.

Anyway, back to this month’s Trunk and my vacation favorites! I asked Lauren to focus on vacation staples since we’re heading to Mexico next week and she sent a great mix of classic, effortless pieces and a few items that pushed me with just the right amount “trend.” I requested easy-breezy items, summer whites, sandals, etc and Lauren included just that. Without further ado, here are my Trunk Club Vacation Favorites…

4 Swimwear Styles in Neutral Tones to Try This Season

4 Swimwear Styles to Try This Season |

Whether you’re heading on vacation or prepping for the warm weather season, there’s a swimwear style to suit you. I’m breaking down the must-have styles below!

If you don’t bring a strapless swimsuit on vacation, did you even go on vacation? Ok, yes of course you did, but it’s truly a must-have style in any woman’s collection. If tan lines aren’t your thing or you want a style that wears seamlessly under your vacation dresses and spaghetti straps—a strapless or bandeau style is for you. Tip: look for one with a removable halter strap to go from sporty to strapless in an instant. Something without underwire will also be most comfortable.

Whenever heading on vacation, I always make sure to bring something that will be both comfy and practical. Leave the strapless styles for sunbathing, something strappy in a sporty silhouette will be your best friend for snorkeling, jet skiing, swimming—and everything in between. Look for styles with thicker straps for added support!

For something sweet to pair with shorts hanging by the pool, a flirty and feminine swimsuit will be your best friend. Look for ruffles or sheer details like lace and crochet or try a flirty off-the-shoulder silhouette. A well-placed ruffle or a hint of sleeve can be just the extra bit of coverage you crave. Tip: white makes a tan pop!

One-piece swimsuits have made a major comeback in the recent years. And with good reason. They’re a great way to stay both comfortable and cool and can offer plenty of coverage or show plenty of skin. They can be sleek, chic and classic and still just as sexy (if that’s your thing). Pick your style preference—sporty, feminine or strapless—and I promise you’ll feel confident in this silhouette this season.

Vacation Style: Outfit Ideas for Mexico

white lace top

I am finally getting around to sharing some of my vacation looks from Mexico! To be honest, I spent much of my days in swimwear and cutoff shorts but showering off the salt water, letting my hair air dry and walking down the cobblestone streets to dinner was one of my favorite parts of the day. I loved having pretty pieces to take me into the evening, even if it was just for tacos and a bucket of beer.

white lace top and cutoff shorts

Denim shorts are obviously a must for warm weather and a Mexico vacation is no exception. I know people have a hard time finding their holy grail cutoff shorts that don't ride up or show too much and these high-rise One Teaspoon shorts are just that for me. Sizing note: Do size UP!

I ended up buying several dresses from Princess Polly and I was so impressed with the fit and quality. They came with express shipping from Australia to the US and for the few pieces I had to return, I was able to do so with ease.

I loved this golden mini dress and it has the sweetest, most feminine fit. The spaghetti straps look great with a tan and the knotted bust gave me room for adjustments. Sizing note: I sized UP to a AUS 10 in my Princess Polly pieces.

I also ADORE these white slide sandals, as I noted in several of the posts I shared on Instagram. They have the most comfortable fit and the white went with everything. I had zero issues walking around in them all day.

Another favorite Princess Polly piece was this little white wrap dress. Again, I sized up to the AUS 10 and I loved the flattering silhouette and hints of skin. The back also ties into a bow and I love a back flaunt.

My beach and pool-wear was easy, effortless and appropriate for sunbathing, swimming and lounging. These Aerie bandeau tops in black and white were easy to throw on for minimal tan lines and I loved the sporty yet feminine feel of this knotted triangle top. SO on-trend yet the black keeps it classic. They also have amazing prices.

Random beauty note—I also completely fell in love with this Nyx Wonder Stick for highlighting and contouring. It was so easy to use on no-makeup, pool days for a little something extra.

I brought three maxi dresses with me on this trip because they're my favorite for throwing on when you want to feel effortless yet put together in an instant. Bonus points for letting your sunburns and bug bites have some coverage—ha!

I got so many compliments on this gingham maxi dress and I ADORE the relaxed fit of this cream one by Somedays Loving. I definitely recommend bringing an effortless cotton maxi dress in any color. They're perfect for throwing on to head to the pool or dressed up for dinner.

Another favorite I wasn't able to snag a photo of was this Billabong ruffle maxi dress in cream.

Skirt separates are a favorite outfit combo of mine, so I made sure to bring a couple options. Wrap skirts are so flattering and are something you can easily throw on with a comfy tank or tee and you can't go wrong with a classic denim number. I love the embroidery on this one from Topshop

If you have a vacation coming up, I'd love to hear what you love wearing! Is it dresses, shorts or skirts?

Vacation Prep: What to Pack for Mexico

mexico vacation style

Planning a vacation is always an exciting thing but undoubtedly almost always comes with added stress, as well. Though once you have your dates lined up, your ticket booked and your time-off requested, in comes the fun stuff: planning your itinerary and, of course, the outfits

I feel lucky to be able to travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at least once a year and thought I would share my vacation planning process, i.e., what I consider essentials in case you're planning a tropical trip of your own. I'm sharing some looks from previous trips but you can see more from my Mexico Vacation Style post from last year, as well.

So, without further ado, here’s what I pack + a few things I have my eye on:

casual vacation style

Start From The Bottom

When I'm traveling to a warm-weather destination like Mexico, I always like to start with my favorite bottoms as an easy base for any ensemble. Be sure to bring along essentials like shorts! For a week-long trip, I like to rely on a trusted pair of denim shorts in my favorite wash (light and high-rise), add in one more denim wash (like white) and then bring a couple easy-breezy styles in linen or something lightweight and silky that just feels soft and effortless. Having a couple fun and/or breezy skirts is perfect, as well.

Note: On the plane, I will usually either wear a pair of leggings or jeans I can use in case of cooler nights, though I find I never end up wearing jeans once I get there. Do check the weather though because you can get rain! Leggings come in handy when you want to take off on an active excursion, as well.

Add Basics

Linen and cotton knits that keep you comfortable and cool are a must and are something that always accompany me on a warm-weather trip. I like to have a couple effortless tanks, tees or bodysuits and even comfy off-the-shoulder styles in neutral tones that will pair with everything. Your basics will be perfect to throw on with any of your shorts/skirts or wear with leggings for day hikes or excursions.

Try Tropical Statement Tops

This is my personal favorite part of vacation outfit planning. I tend to rely on classic pieces for my everyday wardrobe but like to be a bit more fun, flirty and festive for my trips to Puerto Vallarta. I still love a fun top in classic white but will also gravitate towards a few more bold tones like yellow, oranges and corals and look for statement sleeves, off-the-shoulder styles and anything with fun hems and details like cutouts, lace and crochet.

Basically, don't be afraid to mix in any of your favorite trends. I also love summery prints like gingham, floral or boho anything and even crop tops that pair perfectly with high-waisted bottoms.

Dresses, Skirts and Rompers

What’s the easiest thing to throw on in warm weather? Dresses, of course. Pack along a comfy knit, a maxi dress for day and night and, depending on your travel length, 2-3 sweet summer dresses and/or rompers. Again, I love boho details and bold tones here.

off shoulder striped bikini

I like to bring 2-3. One for sunbathing (think bandeau styles for minimal tan lines), a sporty style for outings like jet-skiing, snorkeling, etc. (love a halter for this) and one extra just for fun. I think I might try out a one-piece here but consider cut-outs and off-shoulder styles. Don't forget the coverups!

I am not one to go all-out with a suitcase full of shoes so having styles that will work with every outfit is a must. I like to bring a “statement” sandal like a gladiator style. I tend to love metallics that look sleek for day or dressed up for dinner but will also bring a pair in a light neutral tone that looks great with a tan. I adore the Dolce Vita Jasmyn or for this. Espadrilles are great, too!

I also recommend bringing a slip-on sandal (flip-flop style) that gives you easy on-and-off access for the beach or pool. Tkees is a great brand for this! I always bring one pair of sneakers that I wear on the plane, as well.

Again, I don’t want to haul around a new bag for each outfit so I tend to bring one neutral and small crossbody and one tote bag that I can use for the beach. This can double as your personal item on the plane, too! Just throw your crossbody in there. I missed the straw/rattan bag bandwagon last season but it’s still very “in,” so I have my eye on a few sweet, circle bags.

In terms of jewelry, I think it can be fun to have a statement piece to dress up an outfit for dinner but it's so hot that I really don't like having anything heavy on me. Save the space and avoid post-packing tangles by opting for your daily basics. These Gorjana rings and a comfy, soft banded watch have become the only things I wear on a tropical trip.

Don't forget your sunglasses! I will be bringing my classic Ray-Ban's but also found a cheap dupe that I can swap in for days spent on the water so I can enjoy myself without the fear of losing them.

And that's it! If I missed anything or you have any questions, let me know!

If you're looking for a bit more visual inspiration, feel free to follow my Vacation Style board on Pinterest as I add more there. I will share any more updates here as they come and if it's helpful, I can also add another post with what I've purchased!

Safe and happy travels!
