A Quick Wedding Weekend in Carmel

A Quick Wedding Weekend in Carmel | www.girlmeetsgold.com

If you follow along on Instagram, you may have seen our quick getaway to Carmel! It’s been one of my favorite places to visit since I was a kid (we’ve always made a trip around the holidays) and, this year, we got to spend a weekend there for a family wedding. And it was wonderful. :)

Carmel is definitely a place that sparks a lot of nostalgia for me. We tend to go to the same spots with every trip but I wanted to share some of our favorites plus a few things to do in Carmel in case you’re planning your own visit.

Where We Stayed

Since we have dogs, we now (of course) exclusively stay somewhere that allows them. Carmel is incredibly dog-friendly, so it’s fun to bring them and it’s not difficult to find places they’re allowed. We ended up at Carmel Garden Inn, which is a great location just at the edge (and up a few blocks) from Ocean Avenue.

It’s an adorable bed & breakfast with quintessential, quaint Carmel charm—cottage vibes, fireplaces and florals. If you can snag a room with a patio, I would highly recommend it!

Obviously, you still can’t leave your dog unattended in your room. On a normal trip, we’d take them everywhere with us (restaurants included) but since we were in Carmel for a wedding, we ended up using Rover for a pet sitter, which I highly recommend!

Ever since I was little, we’ve been going to Pâtisserie Boissiere as the first stop upon our Carmel arrival. My parents always ordered the French Onion Soup (add sherry) and it’s only been in my recent adult years that I’ve finally enjoyed (and craved!) it myself!

An adorable setting for French country food, this is the perfect place to stop for brunch, lunch or a quick pastry bite. They do also serve dinner, though we’ve never been! For a light lunch, we split a seafood sandwich on a croissant and (bien sûr/of course) added the French Onion Soup.

Bonus: they’re dog-friendly! They’ll pop you into a perfect little section at the back.

There’s nothing quite like Carmel’s charm. A walk from the Inn to downtown will greet you with plenty of flower stops and photo ops. In the mornings, walk downtown to grab your morning cup at one of many coffee stops. We picked up coffees + breakfast sandwiches at Cafe Carmel and walked across the street to Carmel Plaza to enjoy it outside on the patio with the dogs. There are plenty of tables + a plethora of opportunities to window shop!

Carmel Plaza gives me so much nostalgia because it’s where we used to see Santa (the real one 😂) around Christmas time. If you’re able, Carmel during the holidays is a must!

The actual wedding was at a beautiful and historic church followed by reception atop Il Fornaio restaurant. This was the perfect location to catch a beach + sunset view. Absolutely stunning and easy to grab a drink there if you’re looking for a quick stop. It’s connected to Pine Inn which is another great option to stay downtown.

It was a bit of a whirlwind weekend with all the wedding events and family gatherings but a trip to Carmel Beach was a non-negotiable. It’s dog-friendly (they can be off-leash!) and the dogs LOVE it. Weather in Carmel is pretty mild (it definitely gets cold) but when the sun is out and you’ve just walked from one end of Ocean Avenue to the beach, you’ll be plenty warmed up. With that being said, I just generally always bring a layer any time of year—though we do always tend to go from Oct-Dec. I packed my essentials: jeans + cashmere tee + comfy layer.

On our last morning, we had breakfast at the Inn (veggie frittata, hard-boiled eggs and pastries) and then grabbed a quick smoothie before heading back home. We tried Carmel Belle and their smoothie selection was wonderful.

Recap + More To Do:

• We stayed at Carmel Garden Inn & it’s adorable. I recommend trying to get a room with a patio if you can.

• Carmel is very dog-friendly but we used Rover for a pet sitter during the wedding events and had an amazing experience!

• Have lunch at Patisserie Boissiere. Get the French Onion Soup. Also dog-friendly!

• Window shop at Carmel Plaza. Beautiful around the holidays!

• A lot of the places we eat have a nostalgia factor for me but we love: Little Napoli for dinner, Grasings Restaurant has a pet-friendly patio for dinner, The Tuck Box is cute/quaint for breakfast

• Cottage of Sweets for after-dinner chocolates 😋

• Pop into all the cute shops on Ocean Avenue

  • Check out the Cypress Inn and Carmel Mission

As always, thank you so much for reading, and if you have a Carmel-by-the-sea trip planned—enjoy!!

A Transitional Look for Fall

A Transitional Look for Fall | www.girlmeetsgold.com

Welcome, fall and fall looks! We had some unusual rain last week and that combined with cooler California mornings had me in sweaters and fall things. 🍁My early fall wardrobe is a bit like my summer wardrobe (good denim and soft whites) but I love adding quintessential fall things like booties and the perfect wool hat!

These Sole Society Callan slingbacks are the perfect style for these in-between months when you’re craving fall but need to keep your feet (just a little bit) cool. I love how these instantly give the look and feel of fall but feel lighter on the foot. Sometimes it can be tricky to pair booties with jeans and these completely take the guesswork away. They look amazing with any length or style but I really love them with a straight leg silhouette like these Levi’s wedgie jeans. The taupe tone is a wardrobe must (it goes with everything!) but they do also come in black. I can see these being a great option for a fall night out, i.e., when you need something in-between dressy and casual and, of course, comfortable! These are basically a cross between a bootie, a mule and a pump and they’re perfect. The pointed toe also helps add length! For sizing: I’m in between sizes and did size UP in this pair.

I’ve been adding fall hats to my collection over the past couple seasons and currently have a couple of colors like tan and dark brown but the perfect taupe tone was missing—until now. This one from Sole Society might be a new favorite because it’s structured. The brim is completely solid—NO flopping at all! Which I love. Don’t get me wrong—there’s nothing wrong with a floppy hat but sometimes they just droop and I find they don’t look as chic. This one is stiff in a good way!

The hat paired perfectly with this fluffy white sweater (SO soft and also available in crewneck here!) to add a little cozy to this casual look but it would look just as cute with fall dresses or an edgy outfit like all-black. I tossed on this Sole Society black suede backpack I think might just become my work bag because I love having something I can completely zip up to keep all my work items (and computer) clean and dry into the rainy season.

This is definitely one of my go-to outfit combinations for the season—switch up the sweater with other neutrals or even pops of fall color, try black denim—the options are endless! Did I mention everything (minus the sunglasses) is under $100? 🙌🏼

As always, thank you so much for reading and happy fall!

4 Must-Have Layers for Fall

4 Must-Have Layers for Fall | www.girlmeetsgold.com

From left to right: The Utility: ONE | TWO / The Blazer: ONE | TWO | THREE / The Teddy: ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR / The Trench: ONE | TWO

With fall on the horizon, I wanted to share a few of my favorite go-to outerwear options. These are the main staples I reach for with casual wear and I think that’s often the category where people crave a little extra inspiration. The everyday layers you live in, the styles that are comfortable and not overly fussy…the ones you reach for that just make you feel good. These are those.

I shared outfit inspiration from last season for each outerwear option and, unfortunately, the exact styles are all old or sold out but I made sure to link plenty of dupes to recreate the looks!

4 Must-Have Casual Layers for Fall | www.girlmeetsgold.com

The Utility

Whether you call it a military jacket, fleet jacket, utility jacket or anorak, there’s no denying this is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. This will be the style you reach for to pair with everything from jeans to leggings and will be a go-to for morning dog walks and school drop-offs to casual dinners out. This style is incredibly versatile and I personally love the double-duty option of wearing it open, cinched or tied at the waist. Olive green is also a great option with an instantly casual vibe. It’s a great fall neutral to break up your other favorite neutrals and the color goes with practically everything—you just can’t go wrong!

See how I styled mine with Spanx faux leather leggings and sneakers in this post.

4 Must-Have Layers for Fall | www.girlmeetsgold.com

The Blazer

For when you want to feel a little more put together, a blazer is the answer. This is the layer that adds plenty of structure and style without any fuss. I personally prefer one with a little stretch for added comfort (and movement) and tend to opt for something with a touch of spandex and a boyfriend silhouette. I find this strikes just the right balance between structured and relaxed aka casual-cool.

A blazer is what you’ll reach for for date night, girls night, special events, work parties, school events, holidays and more. Throw on jeans and a white tee with a blazer on top and I promise you’ll feel instantly chic and more “styled.”

Last fall, I loved the vibe a plaid blazer gave to any outfit but am also craving a camel color for something classic, neutral and chic.

See how I styled mine with black denim and faux snakeskin flats in this post.

4 Must-Have Layers for Fall | www.girlmeetsgold.com

The Teddy

Another great casual option with just the right amount of “trend.” A teddy (aka fleece aka sherpa aka faux shearling) jacket is equal parts comfy and luxe and I personally love how they look both dressed up and dressed down. I’ve picked up a few lower-end styles over the years and last year decided to splurge on a Madewell version that got so much wear and definitely felt a little more elevated and structured than any of the $20 versions I’d tried over past seasons.

This is the comfy-cozy layer you’ll find necessary when you just feel cold! Last year, I was constantly grabbing my teddy jacket to take the dogs out in the morning and it’s great that it’s a style you can also feel comfortable cuddling up on the couch in. 😅

UPDATE! Madewell brought this sherpa jacket back!

See mine styled casually in this post.

The Trench

If you don’t have a trench coat in your collection, I highly recommend adding one this season. This is truly a wardrobe staple every woman should own and you’ll wear yours all fall through spring. I love the look of a sleek style with no hood but to make it truly functional (i.e. wearable for a rainy day), I would opt for a style with a hood—bonus points if it’s removable!

This is another outerwear staple that just looks chic with minimal effort. You can throw one on to elevate a leggings + sneakers look, pair with cozy sweaters and booties for something casual or even layer over dresses all season long. 👏🏼

Nude Cami with White Pants and Denim Jacket

Nude Cami with White Pants and Denim Jacket | www.girlmeetsgold.com

If you follow me on Instagram (or read my blog), it’s definitely no secret that my go-to outfit formula is blue jeans + white top + XYZ shoe and done. ✔️And as we head into fall, I tend to keep this formula but with one minor twist added into the outfit rotation. I’ll sometimes swap the blue jeans for white or black denim to make layering with a denim jacket a breeze. 😎Is this a mind blowing outfit? No. Does it make you look and feel chic as hell? Definitely.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good Canadian Tuxedo (i.e. denim on denim look) but there’s something so chic about a denim jacket paired with white pants and something innately “cool” about a denim jacket worn with black jeans. Visual in this post! It’s truly one of those “I have nothing to wear” formulas that works…and if it ain’t broke…

For this summer-to-fall look, I chose white pants, pairing my favorite Everlane straight leg pants with this And Other Stories nude cami and then threw a denim jacket into the mix as an easy layer. I love how the pants and pointed toe Cole Haan flats elevate the outfit just slightly but you could just as easily try skinny jeans and white sneakers for something ultra-casual. Coming from someone who’s typically a ‘skinny jeans only’ type of person, these pants have become my absolute favorite flattering straight leg style. They still have plenty of structure and I love the ultra-high rise and subtle flare. I found these run a little big. I’m normally a size 25 or 0 in denim and had to go with the 00 in these.

And a tiny tip for making any out feel more chic than casual on the casual-chic spectrum—or even from heading into sloppy territory? Your neckline! It would be so easy to reach for your favorite relaxed tee here but…! Instead of the lived-in, v-neck style you always reach for, try one with a crewneck or square neck. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good relaxed, comfy tee but anything that droops or gapes or just hangs there can so easily read as sloppy. If you opt for styles with a bit more shape (whether it’s in fabric or neck line or both) there’s an added element of structure that I promise will make you feel just as comfortable—and ten times chicer. 👏🏼

For reference, I’m wearing a US 2 in this nude camisole and it runs true to size.

What’s your go-to outfit formula as we head into fall? Do you have one?

As always, thank you so much for reading!

Levi's Shorts and Comfy Summer to Fall Flats

Levi's Shorts and Comfy Summer to Fall Flats

There’s been lots of talk of fall on Instagram but I’m personally still holding onto summer and these warmer temps. I am, however, slowly adding more fall-ready staples into my closet. My biggest summer shopping trend was not focusing too much on, well, trends. I tried my best to think about how every new addition to my closet would really work in my wardrobe. And not just work for one event, one Instagram post, one outfit…really work beyond those boundaries.

One of my favorite summer shoe staples I’ll 100% be taking into fall: the Everlane Day Glove. I have these in the Caramel color and they are buttery-soft, leather ballet flats that fit like a glove. I gravitate towards nude shoe tones because they not only go with everything but they really elongate the leg. It’s just a flattering look down the leg line. I also usually prefer a pointed toe for this reason but there’s something about this ballet style that just feels just as chic and effortless. FYI, these come in tons of colors and even new suede options.

Last Call to Shop the 2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale!

Last Call to Shop the 2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale!

The 2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ends Sunday August 4th! This means sale prices go UP August 5th. If you’ve been sitting on your cart or waiting for restocks, now is definitely the time to do a final sale sweep, hit add to cart and press purchase!

To be honest, I didn’t go crazy shopping the sale this year and they didn’t do as many restocks as I hoped but I did find some favorite purchases and things that will be (and already have been!) essential to my closet. There are also tons of great buys from their Beauty Exclusives and I always recommend checking out the Home Department for cozy things like blankets and remembering the “little things”—like underwear. 🤣

I wanted to roundup some items still in stock (and hopefully *still* in stock the moment you’re reading this!) You can see browse more of my previous #NSALE posts HERE

An Easy Way to Wear a Lace Cami

An Easy Way to Wear a Lace Cami

Two things to keep in rotation in your closet no matter the season: lace camisoles and duster cardigans.

A lace camisole is an easy step-up from your basic cotton cami and a silk or satin fabric so easily makes your look feel elevated and effortless. I recently added this white lace cami from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (similar in-stock options linked below) to my collection and it’s a fresh addition to my basic black, navy and olive camisoles. The styling options are endless for a cami in any color, whether worn alone or layered up. I love how it can make a pair of jeans (or even denim shorts) feel instantly dressed-up.
