Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Tariq and I went out for dinner and drinks on Friday and it was SO damn windy (and just a little bit freezing), so I’d like to apologize in advance for these…um, very winded, slightly blurry, kind of funny-faced photos. I swear I was happy. 💁‍♀️

This was an incredibly easy look for an impromptu date night, made up of items most of us probably already have in our closet: the classic striped button-down (button-up?), dark wash denim, black booties and a moto/biker jacket. This look truly takes you from desk to dinner with ease. Keep a moto jacket on-hand or in your car and you can easily swap out your blazer or office cardigan.

These are one of the Topshop jeans I got in my Trunk Club (blog post coming soon) and I can’t get over the super skinny, flattering fit. Fyi, they do run a bit small/very skinny, so you may want to consider sizing UP! Here I’m wearing my normal size but easily could have gone one size up.

I know we’re heading into spring but I also highly recommend these Marc Fisher ankle boots (from my first Trunk Club) if you’re in need of a really good pair. Sometimes I’ve disliked black booties in the past for making an outfit feel…clunky? Not as sleek?…but these are a winner. They’re just cool-as-can-be and give a really sleek, chic vibe with any outfit. You guys know I’ve been all about adding higher quality wardrobe staples to my collection and these are definitely one of them.

Heading into spring, I love this exact same outfit with light wash boyfriend fit jeans (like these Levi’s), nude flats and swap out the striped shirt for crisp white! So maybe it’s not the exact same outfit but it’s an easy variation.

My exact J.Crew shirt is old (gotta love a closet staple you get years out of 🙌🏼), so I’m linking dupes!

THE DETAILS

Camel Coat, White Sweater + Talking About Shopping Less

Happy, happy New Year, friends! I hope you’re all enjoying time off or time spent with friends and family. We’ve had a busy holiday season but have also been able to enjoy some relaxation and I hope the same for you!

I’ve been meaning to share this look on the blog and thought it would be the perfect classic, timeless look to kick off the New Year and also share something that’s been on my mind. One thing I’ve been working on is shopping with intention (meaning adding more wardrobe staples vs. trends), while also re-working items in my closet. I think in this world of Instagram and blogging, there’s so much “stuff” with pressure to buy, buy, buy, keeping up with the latest this or that. And while I don’t think there’s anything wrong with indulging or treating yourself, sometimes you just need a reset.

Honestly, I think one thing that’s helped has been our move. I have an outrageous amount of clothes. And packing them into countless boxes helped me visualize this excess. So many don’t even see the light of day. And that’s horrible. Stressful even! Why am I buying so much, why do I feel like I’m wasting so much, why do I feel like I have nothing to wear? I spent some time purging and donating, while giving life to items in my closet I truly love, and also focusing on building up my wardrobe staples. My plan is to continue this pattern. And honestly, you guys…it’s refreshing.

This season, I’ve shopped less, investing in pieces I truly love and have noticed I actually have less desire to shop—yet somehow I have more to wear.

I finished 2018 with this mindset (shopping with intention) and it’s something I plan to continue into (and hopefully through) 2019. Building a wardrobe of items that fill a void, pieces I feel confident in, things I can wear again and again, season after season, and pieces that are worn, loved and see the light of day.

For me, this outfit is the epitome of what I want to continue to build on. I bought this camel coat last year (I think during Black Friday or a holiday sale) and hesitated because we don’t have that many opportunities to wear coats in day-to-day life in California. But I’m so glad I ended up with it because a camel coat is one of those timeless wardrobe staples I’m talking about. Something you can reach for with everything and that you can throw on to feel put-together and chic in an instant. THAT is the feeling I want to focus on in 2019.

Classic Camel Coats

Pairing camel with winter white is one of my favorite combinations and white sweaters are a soft spot for me. You guys, I have too many. BUT, my intention is to focus on more classic silhouettes this season. For me, that means fewer oversized styles and slouchy silhouettes I don’t always feel work for any and every occasion. Don’t get me wrong, slouchy sweaters have their place (hello, #weekendstyle with leggings and sneakers) but I know I feel better in something with a little more structure and it’s what I end up reaching for when I want to look and feel presentable. Sweater styles I’ve been looking for are crew necks, mock necks and generally styles that have a bit more structure. Also, I don’t need 5-7 similar lower-quality sweaters when I can have 2-3 high-quality staples.

Classic Staple Sweaters

Another area I’ve focused on is boots. I have too many shoes, not enough shoes to wear. Anyone else? I talked about these M.Gemi Corsa boots already and if you have the opportunity to spend a little more, I highly recommend them and the M.Gemi brand in general. This pair is timeless and chic and can be worn casually and dressed up—which was something I know I was lacking. I love how they come up a little higher on the leg, which is great for letting skinny jeans fall into or straighter styles fall over. In this outfit, you can see how I tucked my jeans into them. I also love the 2.15 inch heel on these. They’re incredibly comfortable and easy to wear. You can get $60 off with code TYLER60. I’m between an 8 and 8.5 and wear the 39 in these.

You also may have seen I asked my Trunk Club Stylist (see this post) for some everyday boots and I ended up buying two more pairs that also fill a void in my collection. These Steve Madden ankle boots were the perfect-shade-of-brown booties (I have the cognac suede) I couldn’t put my finger on I was missing. I’ve had a hard time with Chelsea boots in the past but these are a great everyday-casual style I’ll be slipping into. The price point is great at just under $100 and they come in several colors. FYI, I always wear an 8.5 in Steve Madden but I almost think I could have even done an 8. I read reviews from people mentioning they sized up but I would probably stick to your normal size first.

The last pair of ankle boots I bought myself this season will be another wardrobe staple for me and also came in my Trunk Club. These Marc Fisher ‘Yale’ Chelsea boots in black are my new “cool girl” boots. Sleek, stylish and a little slick. These can easily do casual to dressy and will be what I reach for on a night out and will be my go-to with black denim and a moto jacket. In my experience, these run a little big. I had to exchange the 8.5 for an 8.

Classic Ankle Boots

To be honest, the main thing that has changed in terms of my shopping is this: I ask myself if something fills a void in my wardrobe. If the answer is no, I don’t buy it. And I am going to try to continue shopping with this mindset. For me, I know my void includes timeless sweaters I can wear for both work and play, outerwear that can do double duty and I always seem to notice a lack when I need something a little dressy or special for a night out.

What’s an area of your own closet you’d like to build? I plan to continue to share great deals, sales, finds and my favorite outfits with you all but I am honestly so excited to focus on building up a closet full of wardrobe staples (and pieces I feel good in) and I can’t wait to shop less in 2019.

As always, thank you SO much for reading and Happy HAPPY New Year to all of you!

xx Tyler

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2018 Guide

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2018 Catalog.jpg

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2018 Catalog

It's officially that time of year! Early Access to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts this Thursday, July 12th and while I'm sure many of you have seen, heard and shopped the sale in the past, I wanted to take a moment to share a few details + how I shop.

What is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale? And why is everyone telling me I need to shop it?

This once-a-year, one-of-a-kind sale is a bit different than other sales you'll find. Typically, brands will mark down end-of-season items. On the contrary, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale releases BRAND NEW items at up to 40% off. So instead of shopping spring and summer discounted pieces, you'll be seeing brand new merchandise for the fall and winter season ahead. Do note, they do also release plenty of transitional items, beauty, home, etc.

You'll want to take advantage of this sale if you're looking to get a head start on your fall and winter wardrobe, make a few key investment purchases or if you simply love a great deal.

When is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

  • July 12-19, all cardmembers get to shop Early Access in stores and online. If you're not a Nordstrom cardmember, I promise you it's 100% worth it. I have a Nordstrom retail card which, to me, is the simplest way to go. It's not a credit card, there's no interest, no monthly payments. It's linked directly to your checking account and you earn points for every $1 spent.
  • July 20-August 5, sale opens to everyone, with or without a Nordstrom card.

Tips + Strategy for Shopping the Sale

  • My biggest tip is to shop early and to shop online. Items go fast, really fast. So if there's something you have your eye on, grab it!
  • I prefer to purchase everything online and utilize their curbside or in-store pickup option when available. That way, I can buy online without the hassle and they usually have dressing rooms added to the order pickup section, so it's easy to see and quickly try-on items if needed.
  • Prioritize your shopping needs. I like to start the sale having a clear picture of what I want/need. Browsing the entire sale can get overwhelming very quickly, so I like to make sure I have a focus. Here are a few of the main categories I like to take advantage of: denim, bags, boots/shoes, sweaters, outerwear.

Personally, I like to buy "classic" pieces in all of the above categories or items that fill a void in my wardrobe. For example, black ripped, high-rise jeans and nude loafers were on my list last year. For tops, I always know I like to find pieces for date night or styles that will take me from summer into fall, like lightweight sweaters and cardigans.

  • Browse categories based on what you need/want most. I usually start with anchor pieces I know I want like denim, shoes and bags then move on to tops, sweaters and outerwear, followed by beauty and accessories!
  • Don't be afraid to place multiple orders! I love Nordstrom because of their free shipping which means I never feel like I'm wasting money shipping multiple orders. Things sell out very quickly, so I like to snag items I know I want, then do another round to make sure I didn't miss anything or to grab things that came back in stock.

I hope this is helpful and for reference, feel free to browse a few of last year's sale posts HERE, HERE and HERE. I will be sharing more as the sale begins including what I bought, what I love and favorites still in stock as the sale goes along. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions at all and I always appreciate you shopping with me!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Layers & Purchases

From left to right: BlankNYC , Trouvé , cupcakes and cashmere

Excuse my fitting room selfies and Snapchat snaps here, but I wanted to share some of my favorites from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, as well as my first purchases. I am loving the layers and I swear I love summer, but now I'm really ready for fall. Thankfully San Francisco is cold at night, so I can wear booties and layers every season which is why they're one of my favorite purchases. I'm always looking for faux leather layers to add to my collection and the #Nsale does not disappoint this year.

I'm also a million percent obsessed with this BP Hooded Longline Cardigan. It's crazy soft and cozy and will be so great over leggings and tunics or for lounging at home. I got an XS. I probably would have gotten the XXS, but they didn't have it in store and I didn't want to wait to order it, because I have no patience.

BlankNYC is my absolute favorite brand for faux leather. The fit is incredible and they're so reasonably priced. I didn't purchase this All or Nothing mixed material jacket YET, but I'm pretty sure I will. It also comes in olive. If I can get my hands on this Suede Moto Jacket though, it's definitely my top choice.

The fit of these Hudson Krista jeans is insane. They're so comfy and I love the edginess and faded color. Fit true to size.

I love the stripes on this BP shirt and how I can wear it now with shorts and layered into fall. Wearing an XXS.

Perfect way to lighten up your faux leather. I love the color on this Trouvé drape front jacket. I'm wearing an XS.

Finally, I love love my new Steve Madden Sharini booties and AG jeans. I normally wear a 25 in denim, but I got the 24 in the jeans, because they fit tighter through the leg and ankle. I'm really picky about skinny jeans and prefer a super skinny fit. If you like a normal skinny fit, you can definitely go for your normal size. I love Steve Madden and the color and style of these ankle boots is really classic, but still unique thanks to the side slits. I usually wear an 8 or 8.5 and got the 8.5.

What are you loving in the #Nsale this year?

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Last Minute Roundup

Welp, it's officially the final weekend to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which means prices are about to go up, up, UP! I decided to do a final roundup to see if there was anything I missed and well--there was. And kind of a lot. THESE GOLD SHOES for example?!? WHAT?? I kind of might HAVE TO HAVE THEM and think the metallic will be perfect to finish out summer and take into fall.

I'm forever loving blush tones and neutrals and just about everyone snagged this tunic, which I'm really loving in the color "pink hush," Gorgeous to take into fall, as well. Paired with white skinnies now and black skinnies later. Loving it. If you're looking for a new faux leather jacket, this one is available at an amazing price aka less than $64! SO perfect over the tunic!! This cute tee is also available in 20 colors for only $15.90! Both of the booties I snagged are also still in stock and I love, love, love them both. I grabbed these ones in black and these in chocolate leather, which is really more of a grey in person.

I hope you all found some pieces you love and if you haven't yet--make sure to take advantage before the prices go up, which is Monday, August 3rd!!

Happy shopping!

xx
