4 Must-Have Layers for Fall

From left to right: The Utility: ONE | TWO / The Blazer: ONE | TWO | THREE / The Teddy: ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR / The Trench: ONE | TWO

With fall on the horizon, I wanted to share a few of my favorite go-to outerwear options. These are the main staples I reach for with casual wear and I think that’s often the category where people crave a little extra inspiration. The everyday layers you live in, the styles that are comfortable and not overly fussy…the ones you reach for that just make you feel good. These are those.

I shared outfit inspiration from last season for each outerwear option and, unfortunately, the exact styles are all old or sold out but I made sure to link plenty of dupes to recreate the looks!

The Utility

Whether you call it a military jacket, fleet jacket, utility jacket or anorak, there’s no denying this is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. This will be the style you reach for to pair with everything from jeans to leggings and will be a go-to for morning dog walks and school drop-offs to casual dinners out. This style is incredibly versatile and I personally love the double-duty option of wearing it open, cinched or tied at the waist. Olive green is also a great option with an instantly casual vibe. It’s a great fall neutral to break up your other favorite neutrals and the color goes with practically everything—you just can’t go wrong!

See how I styled mine with Spanx faux leather leggings and sneakers in this post.

The Blazer

For when you want to feel a little more put together, a blazer is the answer. This is the layer that adds plenty of structure and style without any fuss. I personally prefer one with a little stretch for added comfort (and movement) and tend to opt for something with a touch of spandex and a boyfriend silhouette. I find this strikes just the right balance between structured and relaxed aka casual-cool.

A blazer is what you’ll reach for for date night, girls night, special events, work parties, school events, holidays and more. Throw on jeans and a white tee with a blazer on top and I promise you’ll feel instantly chic and more “styled.”

Last fall, I loved the vibe a plaid blazer gave to any outfit but am also craving a camel color for something classic, neutral and chic.

See how I styled mine with black denim and faux snakeskin flats in this post.

The Teddy

Another great casual option with just the right amount of “trend.” A teddy (aka fleece aka sherpa aka faux shearling) jacket is equal parts comfy and luxe and I personally love how they look both dressed up and dressed down. I’ve picked up a few lower-end styles over the years and last year decided to splurge on a Madewell version that got so much wear and definitely felt a little more elevated and structured than any of the $20 versions I’d tried over past seasons.

This is the comfy-cozy layer you’ll find necessary when you just feel cold! Last year, I was constantly grabbing my teddy jacket to take the dogs out in the morning and it’s great that it’s a style you can also feel comfortable cuddling up on the couch in. 😅

UPDATE! Madewell brought this sherpa jacket back!

See mine styled casually in this post.

The Trench

If you don’t have a trench coat in your collection, I highly recommend adding one this season. This is truly a wardrobe staple every woman should own and you’ll wear yours all fall through spring. I love the look of a sleek style with no hood but to make it truly functional (i.e. wearable for a rainy day), I would opt for a style with a hood—bonus points if it’s removable!

This is another outerwear staple that just looks chic with minimal effort. You can throw one on to elevate a leggings + sneakers look, pair with cozy sweaters and booties for something casual or even layer over dresses all season long. 👏🏼

Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Striped Button Down with Moto Jacket

Tariq and I went out for dinner and drinks on Friday and it was SO damn windy (and just a little bit freezing), so I’d like to apologize in advance for these…um, very winded, slightly blurry, kind of funny-faced photos. I swear I was happy. 💁‍♀️

This was an incredibly easy look for an impromptu date night, made up of items most of us probably already have in our closet: the classic striped button-down (button-up?), dark wash denim, black booties and a moto/biker jacket. This look truly takes you from desk to dinner with ease. Keep a moto jacket on-hand or in your car and you can easily swap out your blazer or office cardigan.

These are one of the Topshop jeans I got in my Trunk Club (blog post coming soon) and I can’t get over the super skinny, flattering fit. Fyi, they do run a bit small/very skinny, so you may want to consider sizing UP! Here I’m wearing my normal size but easily could have gone one size up.

I know we’re heading into spring but I also highly recommend these Marc Fisher ankle boots (from my first Trunk Club) if you’re in need of a really good pair. Sometimes I’ve disliked black booties in the past for making an outfit feel…clunky? Not as sleek?…but these are a winner. They’re just cool-as-can-be and give a really sleek, chic vibe with any outfit. You guys know I’ve been all about adding higher quality wardrobe staples to my collection and these are definitely one of them.

Heading into spring, I love this exact same outfit with light wash boyfriend fit jeans (like these Levi’s), nude flats and swap out the striped shirt for crisp white! So maybe it’s not the exact same outfit but it’s an easy variation.

My exact J.Crew shirt is old (gotta love a closet staple you get years out of 🙌🏼), so I’m linking dupes!

How to Wear a Belt Bag in a Chic Way

How to Wear a Belt Bag | www.girlmeetsgold.com

Ask a lot of people their opinion on a fanny pack and their mind might immediately go to something neon and 80’s style or velcro and meant for travel only. But the truth is, today, fanny packs have really evolved into a chic and stylish accessory, more lovingly referred to as: the belt bag.

A belt bag is not only a unique statement piece that can turn heads but it’s also a practical style, allowing you to be hands-free. Great for travel and would be a wonderful accessory option for mom life. Think walks, trips to the zoo, bike rides and really just daily life. Keep in mind, you can still wear a belt bag slung over your head and shoulder.

This & Other Stories O-Ring belt bag is my first foray into the style but it’s something I chose with a lot of intention. I chose black because it’s timeless and can cover both day and night. I chose snakeskin embossed leather because it gives just enough edge to make an intentional statement. And the O-Ring because it adds the finishing touch. Basically, this belt bag has the perfect amount of detail so it doesn’t fall flat. And it really adds a chic flair in an instant.

A belt bag can really help pull a look together and can truly be the perfect finishing touch to elevate a basic outfit. Grab your everyday go-to combination (mine is always jeans and a tee) and try a full or half tuck. I have personally been loving and living in these H&M jersey tops (only $14.99) and they have a comfy, flattering fit that’s not at all messy. They tuck really well but also sort of hold you in. The black on black in this look gives a monochromatic touch that works well for both day and night but you could just as easily top with a brown suede jacket like this one or add an olive cargo jacket (like the one from this post) and sneakers to keep things extra casual.

As we head into spring and summer, belt bags can work incredibly well belted around t-shirt and flirty dresses to add a bit of shape. I personally can’t wait to wear mine with a little white dress but the options are truly endless.

There’s something about an all-black outfit that makes anyone look instantly cool. I swear. I love the edgy vibe black distressed denim adds to any outfit and there’s something so sleek and effortless about pairing black with even more black. When I used to work for Stitch Fix, one of the biggest misconceptions I heard from Clients was that you can’t pair black with brown or navy—and that couldn’t be further from the truth!

I personally love the way black pairs with brown and this BlankNYC faux fur coat (currently back in stock HERE!) gives this all-black outfit a dose of needed warmth—not to mention a luxe touch. I really love how this faux fur style can so easily go from casual to dressy. You can see another holiday look wearing it with white lace in my post HERE. This jacket has been in and out of stock in the brown, so I made sure to link a few more styles below. It does also come in a few more in-stock color options like the prettiest winter white! FYI, I have the size XS.

I’ve also been loving these Madewell jeans in this washed black color. Madewell truly makes great denim you can live in—stretchy, comfy and flattering. I am typically in between a 25 and 26 and always wear a 25 in Madewell jeans.

The Perfect Holiday Bag You Need

I’ve cracked the code to making any outfit look holiday-ready and it’s this little velvet and sequin clutch. Paired with sweaters in any color or as a way to take your work look from desk to holiday dinner, it’s the quickest way to festive attire and just adds the perfect finishing touch and sparkle for the season. I promise.

In this look, I added it to this & Other Stories bell sleeve sweater that can go from casual to dressy with ease. I love the deep green for the season and it instantly feels holiday-ready. Mock neck style sweaters are also a great staple that’s right on-trend. I know turtlenecks aren’t for everyone but a mock neck can bridge the gap to give off that chic and bundled look without sacrificing comfort—or feeling stuffy. Personally, I love having sweaters with just a little something extra and details like mock necks or bell sleeves give basic styles the perfect twist to elevate your holiday look.

Of course, I tucked this sweater into my Levi’s Wedgie jeans that have been getting plenty of wear this season. I love how well they pair with booties and how chic they look with my M.Gemi Corsa boots underneath. These booties are sheer perfection, I swear. I have a hard time finding ankle boots that aren’t too high yet still have a bit of a heel, so they don’t feel frumpy. These are 2.15 inches and are really manageable. I love how they come up higher on the leg and look great with dresses, too. So far, they haven’t needed any breaking in period and are really comfortable for all-day wear.

They’re definitely a splurge but you can get $60 off with code TYLER60 and I promise the quality is incredible. I’m in between sizes (8 and 8.5) and went with the size 39 which fits perfectly.

Camel Sweater and Cognac Ankle Boots

We had a few weeks of spring-like weather but we're back to a "real" winter and I'm swapping out my springy tops for my winter sweaters. There's nothing I love more than a classic sweater and I love the camel tone on this one by Lucky Brand. The subtle dolman sleeves give it a really relaxed feel yet the color keeps it classic. I also love how it's cozy for winter yet still lightweight enough to take into spring paired with shorts or white denim and sandals.

I love having a classic pair of cognac ankle boots and this pair from Nordstrom BP look great with an ankle length jean or your favorite denim cuffed at the ankle. Personally, I love these high-rise Levi's for pairing with ankle booties.

How is the weather where you live? It’s been oh-so-gorgeous here, I haven’t been able to help but add some spring pieces to my wardrobe. I will forever love these distressed Levi’s 721 skinny jeans as my favorite “seasonless” staple and I love the lighter weight on this Lucky Brand bell-sleeve top. Yet, the charcoal tone is still really rich for winter. It has kind of a jersey material that’s super stretchy and I am in love with the comfort factor.

Bell sleeves are a little trickier for layering so I will usually toss a jacket on top of my shoulders with looks like this. But I also can’t wait to wear this with high-waisted shorts and am planning a trip to Mexico early this spring which I think this would be perfect for!

These Dolce Vita Cassius booties are also the perfect light neutral tone to transition with. They go with everything and I personally love the lower heel height for everyday wear.

What are you shopping for right now: winter or spring?

Oh, Vans. I remember my first checkered pair I designed in high school with a pale pink trim that I was so proud of. It’s been a while since I’ve had a pair but I couldn’t resist this soft grey tone. I love the casual-cool vibe sneakers give off and this color goes with just about everything.

I paired them with a favorite Madewell high-rise denim (the fit on these is so good + they're beyond comfy!) but I also love sneakers to dress-down dresses and can see these looking adorable with white denim or cutoff shorts into spring and summer. For now, my trusty BlankNYC moto jacket and this oh-so-cozy ribbed sweater work perfectly.

For reference, I range from an 8 to 8.5 and got the Vans in an 8 and they fit perfectly. Though they were slightly squeaky to break in!
