4 Must-Have Layers for Fall

With fall on the horizon, I wanted to share a few of my favorite go-to outerwear options. These are the main staples I reach for with casual wear and I think that’s often the category where people crave a little extra inspiration. The everyday layers you live in, the styles that are comfortable and not overly fussy…the ones you reach for that just make you feel good. These are those.

I shared outfit inspiration from last season for each outerwear option and, unfortunately, the exact styles are all old or sold out but I made sure to link plenty of dupes to recreate the looks!

The Utility

Whether you call it a military jacket, fleet jacket, utility jacket or anorak, there’s no denying this is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. This will be the style you reach for to pair with everything from jeans to leggings and will be a go-to for morning dog walks and school drop-offs to casual dinners out. This style is incredibly versatile and I personally love the double-duty option of wearing it open, cinched or tied at the waist. Olive green is also a great option with an instantly casual vibe. It’s a great fall neutral to break up your other favorite neutrals and the color goes with practically everything—you just can’t go wrong!

See how I styled mine with Spanx faux leather leggings and sneakers in this post.

The Blazer

For when you want to feel a little more put together, a blazer is the answer. This is the layer that adds plenty of structure and style without any fuss. I personally prefer one with a little stretch for added comfort (and movement) and tend to opt for something with a touch of spandex and a boyfriend silhouette. I find this strikes just the right balance between structured and relaxed aka casual-cool.

A blazer is what you’ll reach for for date night, girls night, special events, work parties, school events, holidays and more. Throw on jeans and a white tee with a blazer on top and I promise you’ll feel instantly chic and more “styled.”

Last fall, I loved the vibe a plaid blazer gave to any outfit but am also craving a camel color for something classic, neutral and chic.

See how I styled mine with black denim and faux snakeskin flats in this post.

The Teddy

Another great casual option with just the right amount of “trend.” A teddy (aka fleece aka sherpa aka faux shearling) jacket is equal parts comfy and luxe and I personally love how they look both dressed up and dressed down. I’ve picked up a few lower-end styles over the years and last year decided to splurge on a Madewell version that got so much wear and definitely felt a little more elevated and structured than any of the $20 versions I’d tried over past seasons.

This is the comfy-cozy layer you’ll find necessary when you just feel cold! Last year, I was constantly grabbing my teddy jacket to take the dogs out in the morning and it’s great that it’s a style you can also feel comfortable cuddling up on the couch in. 😅

See mine styled casually in this post.

The Trench

If you don’t have a trench coat in your collection, I highly recommend adding one this season. This is truly a wardrobe staple every woman should own and you’ll wear yours all fall through spring. I love the look of a sleek style with no hood but to make it truly functional (i.e. wearable for a rainy day), I would opt for a style with a hood—bonus points if it’s removable!

This is another outerwear staple that just looks chic with minimal effort. You can throw one on to elevate a leggings + sneakers look, pair with cozy sweaters and booties for something casual or even layer over dresses all season long. 👏🏼

12 Casual Chic Wardrobe Staples From The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

12 Wardrobe Staples From The 2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale-1.jpg

It’s honestly so easy to get caught up in the shopping craze of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Rather than purchasing the thing everyone has, I prefer to stick to closet staples I’ll reach for and wear across multiple seasons, again and again. Below I’m sharing some of the items I view as wardrobe essentials that will truly work well in any (casual chic) closet. I’ve personally already purchased several of these and will be sharing more about fit and styling options in the coming days.

1. Felt Hat One of the easiest accessories to make your fall look feel more “done.” I love this blush tone for something feminine.

2. Long Sleeve Knit TopVersatile for every season, a classic white knit will pair with everything in your closet. Wear with denim shorts for summertime or layer up with cardigans and coats into fall and winter. I love the subtle ribbed detail on this one and the black and grey are also classic options for your closet.

3. Plaid Blazer This style adds structure and also elevates your basics. I purchased my first plaid blazer in the fall of last year and have worn it with everything from mini skirts and sneakers to the pumpkin patch, black denim and printed flats and something a bit more summer-ready (jeans, white tee and strappy heels) for date night. The menswear or boyfriend style is relaxed yet polished and I personally always prefer one with a bit of stretch!

4. Lace CamisoleWhether dressed up with a blazer or worn casually with a cardigan, lace camisoles in black and white work well for work, day and date night. Pair with the cardigan for something casual or the plaid blazer to dress it up.

5. Neutral Duster CardiganYou will wear a duster cardigan any time of year. From morning coffee to walks with the dogs, in the office and cuddled up on the couch, I highly recommend having one in both light grey and a neutral tone like oatmeal. They go with everything and feel instantly effortless with denim and a white, grey, black, printed (basically any) tee.

6. Skinny Jeans in Light Wash The perfect base for any casual-chic outfit. I love a high rise that makes tucking shirts a bit easier. Pair these with a lace cami in any color and add the plaid blazer for girls night or throw on the cardigan for day-to-day errands.

7. Nude Flats Another style to slip on with any outfit to feel instantly more put together. A pointed toe helps elongate the leg line and the mock-slingback heel on this pair has a similar, sleek effect.

8. Satin Button-Up BlouseThis pajama top style mixes up your everyday blouses just enough yet still feels classic and effortless. Pair with denim in any style and wash or even trousers for the office.

9. Straight Leg DenimThere’s something so effortless about a straight leg in a lighter wash, especially in the summer months. Call them “Mom Jeans” if you want but you’ll love this style with white sneakers, flats or booties.

10. Trench CoatElevate your rainy day outfit with this classic piece. I love how this particular one has a removable hood because they don’t always and this truly makes it practical for rainy days.

11. Printed D’orsay FlatsFor when your neutral outfit needs just the right amount of interest, a pair of printed flats does the job in a way that feels classic and not overdone. This is another style (the d’orsay) that looks very flattering on the foot. I can’t wait to try these with both black and blue denim into fall for the perfect “pop" to any basic look.

12. Black Skinny JeansBlack denim is an easy basic that also adds a subtle edge to any outfit. I love pairing mine with a striped tee and denim jacket or try it with the white lace cami and cardigan for a comfy-cool outfit.

2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Early Access Favorites

2019 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Early Access Favorites

Early Access to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale officially begins Friday at 12:30pm EST and you’re either feeling a little bit anxious, excited, overwhelmed or maybe even uninterested entirely—and that’s ok! Whatever the case, I’m here to hopefully be a resource for all things classic from the #nsale. If you haven’t already, you can see how I shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in THIS POST and also check out my initial “sneak peek” post featuring Classic Buys From The #Nsale.

It’s true things definitely sell out quickly (especially cardigans from Topshop, Madewell, BP., Barefoot Dreams; anything Free People or Nike, Adidas, etc) so one tip is to not sit on your cart for too long. I love how Nordstrom offers free shipping, so it makes it easy to grab multiple sizes and send back what doesn’t work. I also love checking out online and using the in-store pickup option, so you can more easily snag things and try them on without the hassle of rifling through racks.

It’s finally feeling like fall (actually winter) here in the Bay Area and I’ve been pulling out all my favorite outerwear. I adore this color for the season and a faux suede moto style is such a chic and easy basic both for dressing up and down. I bought this specific one a couple years ago from Shopbop and, unfortunately, this exact one is sold out but I found some nearly identical styles at a great price point like this one from H&M.

I wore it with this pretty dark green blouse and my Levi’s wedgie jeans, which are a chic base for any look. I slipped into python flats but you could add booties for colder weather, as well. If you’re looking for a good outerwear option to take you through the season, I highly recommend something faux suede and in this color—it goes with everything! I linked several faux suede styles at multiple price points below.

I hope you’re all staying warm this season and thank you so much for reading!

Fall Staples Under $50

fall finds under $50

Happy October, friends! We’ve finally had some cooler weather here and I’m officially feeling inspired by all things fall! 🍁🍂How about you? I snagged several new fall staples recently and, while I was shopping, realized many of the things I found were under $50! I don’t know about you but I love having tons of reliable pieces for the season and like to save on some things, so I can splurge on others.

The top things I like to save on? Soft, comfy, live-in sweaters and fall accessories. One of my favorite places to snag affordable yet quality pieces (aka shop on a budget) is Nordstrom Rack—hands down. Why? Because they offer so many of the brands I love (and already buy at Nordstrom) at up to 70% off. High-end pieces, low-end prices. 🙌🏼No, this is not a sponsored post, I just genuinely love shopping there. Another favorite is Zappos because you can often find your favorite brands and trends (like Free People) often at a discount and I also love H&M and ASOS for fine knit sweaters and classic staples.

Below I’m rounding up some of the pieces I’ve already snagged plus a several more styles to keep you stylish on a budget this season! Happy fall shopping!

Fall Sweaters Under $50

Fall Accessories Under $50

One of my next goals is to refresh my fall/winter wardrobe with a cozy/effortless jacket or two. Let me know if you’d like to see a post on budget friendly options for this, as well. As always, thank you so much for reading!

All Fall Finds Under $50

Madewell Fall 2018 Collection - San Francisco Event

madewell fall 2018

One of the things that makes fall shopping in 90-degree summer heat a little bit easier...is when you can still wear those fall styles in the summer. And the new Madewell Fall 2018 Collection nailed it. 💯

I got to check out the new collection in-store at Madewell San Francisco Centre this weekend and not only was the collection amazing but so was the store, associates, everything. If you're a Madewell girl and you ever find yourself in SF, it's a must-go. We snacked on sweets and sipped box water and I shared my favorite fall finds + style tips with some amazing locals with already killer Madewell style. It's always so fun to see how others style the same pieces you know and love.

The new collection has the effortless vibe you expect from Madewell with little Southwestern-like twists. I think this makes a fall line extra wearable in terms of transitioning from summer to fall. Those vibes definitely work well with shorts and sandals to finish out a hot, hot season.

One of my favorite pieces from the collection? This Highbury Sweater Tank. This is a closet must-have that can do it all. Wear it now with your favorite shorts and skirts or layer into fall with utility jackets and long sleeve styles. I cannot wait to wear this with jeans and a black moto jacket for an edgy vibe. UPDATE! This sold out real quick but I found a great DUPE!

sleeveless sweater

Here it is layered over this Madewell Surplus jacket (which is also such a must-have, wearing xxs). I am typically an XS in Madewell but went with the small in this sweater to have a bit of a relaxed fit. I was able to tuck into high-waisted denim but it looks just as perfect left untucked and still has some structure. Also comes in mustard yellow for a fall-ready spin.

utility jacket

Another instant favorite was this button-down cami in 'full bloom'. This print popped up in several styles (from tanks to tees to skirts) and I adore the almost moody-like fall floral. This is the perfect way to take floral with you into fall thanks to the deeper color and vibe. Another wear now, wear later piece. I sized up to a 4 in this. Try it with cutoff shorts now, layered under a blazer for work or cozied up with cardigans as the weather cools.

floral cami

I will always love a great relaxed sweater and give me one with a feminine yet still effortless feel—I'm all about it. This swingy ribbed pullover kind of has the perfect relaxed fit. It's definitely swingy which gives a flirty feel but it's certainly not over the top. This is another one I can see cozying up in this season, throwing on to run errands or wearing now with shorts. Basically, I can see myself living in this. I'm wearing a small.

peplum sweater

I get a lot of questions about denim and let me tell you—next to my Levi's, Madewell tops the list for fit, quality and feel. I already own these 9" high-rise skinny jeans in another wash but couldn't resist snagging this updated 'Frankie' wash. These have always been pretty true to size for me but I will say: I was a true size 25 for years but have been sizing up to a 26 in most denim lately. The 25 in these still fit perfectly. I know Madewell also tends to suggest sizing down since their denim does stretch. So, if you're in between sizes, size down. To me, these stay fitted through the leg all day long and have a really great cool, comfy, easy fit.

madewell jeans

This is that same sleeveless sweater in the 'Naples Yellow' which I also adore. This would be a great color to update your fall wardrobe if (like me) neutrals are typically your thing. It has a rich vibe that looks gorgeous with light and dark denim and would be so sweet tucked into a suede skirt paired with over-the-knee boots. Your holiday outfit, done. ✔️Of course, I love it worn casually.

mustard sweater olive jacket

I had a bunch of questions about these Remi Mules and with good reason. They're classic, cool, effortless and another footwear must-have. I always love this rich English Saddle tone for every season but especially for fall. These are padded and super cushiony and comfortable but do run small. I'm typically an 8 or 8.5 and snagged the 8.5 but could have almost done a 9. I'm thinking they'll mold to my feet pretty easily but do be aware!

madewell remi mule

I ended up wearing this easy combination for the event and everyone shopping thought I worked there, so I think that's a win. Though it could have also been the fact I was standing next to my little rack and all the snacks.

I love how you could add a bandana to this look for a little bit of extra interest and wear this exact combo with booties for the fall and (California) winter season.

fall style

All in all, the Madewell Fall Collection is 💯and I hope you guys check it out! I'm adding more of the styles I loved below and would love to hear your thoughts! Any favorites catch your eye?

There's nothing like a fleece jacket to cozy up in this winter and I've been loving all the styles Nordstrom has to offer. From comfy-casual to sleek and more-structured, there's a style to suit you. This one by EVIDNT I snagged from Nordstrom might be the most unique one I've seen yet— I love the moto silhouette!

If you’re anything like me, boot season can be a struggle. I’m not sure why but I have the hardest time finding boots that are comfortable for daily wear yet still make your outfit look on point. I love a flat or low-heeled style for casual days (and I’m 5’6” so I’m not into too much added height) but sometimes find I feel frumpy in flatter styles. Someone please tell me I’m not the only one. I don’t necessarily want to be in “heels” but they really do finish off a look much more nicely. I guess because of the whole longer legs, sleeker silhouette thing.

Because of this, I’m constantly on the hunt for styles that have a bit of height for added style while still maintaining comfort. I also look for boots that come up a little bit higher on the calf so my favorite jeans can easily slip right in without having to mess with tucking, cuffing, etc. because honestly, who has time for that?

I thought a lace-up, combat boot style would be the perfect thing to fill a void in my collection. I love the casual-cool but still slightly dressed-up vibe they can add depending on heel height. I honestly think they look great with both a flat heel or a few inches for added height.

I snagged this pair of Rowly Boots by Dolce Vita from Nordstrom but I’m loving the plethora of lace-up styles I found at Nordstrom this season. From casual with leggings and jeans to dressy with your favorite dresses —even snow styles!— there’s a style to suit you.
